Are there any students who want to help mentor VEX at the two middle schools this year? If yes read on and let Laurie know.

Hello fellow "big kids" of FIRST!

The 2010 Milwaukee Mentor Vex Challenge has been announced - Sea Shore Smash!
http://midwestvex.org/VEX/mentorchallenge/index.shtml
Please note that the tournament will be earlier than in years past - AUGUST 21ST, so time to build your robot is already running short!
Check back to the website in the next few days for registration information.

As always, this event is open to ANYONE and not just Milwaukee teams, so please pass on the information to anyone else you think might be interested.

Good luck teams, and we hope to see you there!

April 18, 2010

The Oconomowoc High School Cooney Tech Robotics Team would like to thank all our sponsors including our corporate sponsors, parents, teachers and mentors. On April 17th we wrapped up our 2009-2010 season in Atlanta, Georgia at the FIRST Robotics Championship. We would like you to know that your contributions were valued and used carefully.

This year was a particularly challenging year because we had a large group of freshman and sophomores. By October we were busy fundraising and training. We are very fortunate to have mentors who start teaching programming and robot driving early. Students had the opportunity to go to WCTC and learn about Lab View programming and robot electrical systems.

By supporting the high school robotics team you help the entire school district and the larger community. Junior Mac Guckenberger spent fall helping the VEX robotics teams at Nature Hill and Silver Lake Intermediate schools. Junior Chris Foyer worked with the LEGO teams at St. Jerome’s School. Senior Emily Hern visited second grade classes in the district making sure that every student learned about engineering and gave them coloring books, created and printed by the robotics team, which give examples of engineering. Students gave robot demonstrations at GE’s take your child to work day, Engineers and Scientist of Milwaukee’s STEMMY Awards banquet, and at a Milwaukee Wave game.

For the January kickoff we invited students from Bay View high school in Milwaukee to come to Oconomowoc for assistance in building their robot. We enjoyed having them join our discussion of how to meet this year’s challenge of moving soccer balls on a field divided into three parts. Building our own robot was more of a challenge too because of the number of new members on our team. Students worked hard with mentors building prototypes for ways to move and kick soccer balls. We are fortunate to have enough mentors so that each student has the opportunity to work closely with the engineers, machinists and welders.

At the Wisconsin Regional in March we had ten matches where our robot was allied with 2 other teams to compete against 3 other robots. Our alliances had 3 wins, 2 ties, and 5 losses. Our new students learned about strategizing with alliance partners and discovered the value of scouting the other 53 teams and learning by observing their designs. Students learn to engineer on the go when they work on repairs in between the matches.

The students continued to come up with ideas and improvements for the robot and headed to the championship on April 14th. There the team and their allies had 2 wins, 1 tie and 7 losses. They were disappointed and yet learned a lot. They had the opportunity to go around the pit area and observe the 344 robots at the event. Teacher Bob Blersch gave them an assignment to write a paper about one unique robot design that they discovered at the event. Students also had the opportunity to visit the LEGO and FIRST Tech Challenge robots competing at the event.

Our season may be over but the fun continues. We will be having a team banquet and then start fundraising for next year with a rummage sale and car washes. We know that this unique opportunity is only possible thanks to the personal commitments from our teachers, abundant volunteered mentor hours, support from our parents and the generous financial support we receive. Thank you again for helping us to promote STEM education in the school district and for giving us this chance to experience this engineering challenge.

I received the following email from AJ:

Dear Cooney Robotics Team 269,

I’m AJ Johnson and I’m living in The Netherlands right now, in the small city of Zwolle about an hour east of Amsterdam. For the next 5 months, I will be working for an American Company called Abbott Laborites as an intern. I’m working on a project where I’m relating the product life cycle to supply chain management; it’s a very tough internship too. I had a very hard time finding my internship, but with my past experience in my life (robotics and other experiences) I knew I had to work just a bit harder to get such a great internship.

I spent my freshmen year studying at UW Platteville and I will go back to Platteville this fall to study. I’m studying International Business and renewable energy, but at the end of the day I just want to be a salesman. During my sophomore year I have been studying abroad in The Netherlands for the last 6 months, but now I will apply what I have learned from my studies to the real world as an intern.

Maybe some people on the team still know who I am. I hope the team is still strong and is still getting things done on time. I was on the team for 4 years and I did a few things for the team over my 4 years, but I spent most of my time working with fundraising and investing in Cooney Robotics future with starting the VEX Robotics program.

The most beneficial experience I had in robotics was leaving my mark not on a robot or on the shipping crate, but within people. With the amazing help of others I was able to leave my mark within the students that come in the future. The mark I left was with the VEX Robotics teams at the different schools. As I’m living in The Netherlands I can look at the Cooney Robotics web page and see the VEX Robotics pictures from this year. That makes me really proud of being on the team because it’s something that I did with the help of many other people to leave a lasting mark on the future of the team. I was never that good at working on the robot or working in the shop, but I still left my mark. I challenge each student to think about what they can do to leave a lasting impression on Oconomowoc High School, the Cooney Robotics team, or what ever they feel is important in their life. I wish you all good luck and I hope you all can get some sleep too. (But don’t forget sleep is for the weak)

Enjoy

I was never that good at working on the robot or working in the shop, but I still left my mark. I challenge each student to think about what they can do to leave a lasting impression on Oconomowoc High School, the Cooney Robotics team, or what ever they feel is important in their life. I wish you all good luck and I hope you all can get some sleep too. (But don’t forget sleep is for the weak)

Enjoy
